GMR (Goods Movement References)?

A GMR, or Goods Movement Reference, is a unique identifier that links your customs declaration or Carnet to the vehicle during its journey abroad. These identifiers are now required at most major UK ports, including Dover, the Eurotunnel and Holyhead. Holding a valid GMR is essential for a smooth border crossing and helps avoid delays and problems.

To obtain a GMR, you need to provide us with the following information:

• Direction of travel: arrival or departure
• Port(s) of entry/exit: list all the ports you will pass through
• Date and time of the border crossing: the exact date and time of your journey across the border
• Vehicle registration: the registration number of the vehicle transporting the goods
• Reference number of the document to be linked:
  • For import declarations, provide the MRN (Movement Reference Number)
  • For export declarations, provide the DUCR (Declaration Unique Consignment Reference)
  • For Carnets, provide the last five digits of the Carnet reference number
