MRN — Movement Reference Number for Customs Clearance. What It Is and How to Track It
The MRN is the "ID" of every customs declaration — it lets you track the status of clearance, communicate with the customs office, and verify the legality of your documents. We explain how to read the MRN and where to check its status.
Questions and answers — MRN
Where do I find my shipment's MRN?
The MRN is issued by the customs agency once the declaration has been lodged. For imports from the UK:
- UK export MRN — issued by the agency on the UK side, needed for the GMR
- PL import MRN — issued by the agency on the PL side, needed to release the goods from control
The agency should send both numbers to the driver and/or the importer via messaging before the vehicle even reaches the border.
What does the "released" status mean for an import MRN?
The "released for free circulation" status means the customs office has accepted the import declaration and the goods can leave customs control. Once this message is issued, the customs warehouse or the driver can physically hand the goods over to the buyer. Before this status — the goods are under customs supervision and cannot be used.
How long is an MRN valid?
An import MRN is permanently attached to a specific declaration — it doesn't have a "validity period" as such. Customs documents (SAD, PZC) should be kept for 5 years (a tax requirement). The MRN is your proof of lawful import in the event of a tax audit.
Can I lodge the customs declaration myself and get an MRN?
Yes — in Poland, any company can lodge a customs declaration directly through the PUESC system, after registering as a "declarant". This requires knowledge of the procedures and a qualified electronic signature. In practice, companies use a customs agency — easyclearance.pl handles the complete process, from lodging the ENS to obtaining the import MRN.
