Returning to Poland from the UK — a formalities checklist

The decision to move back often happens quickly, while the formalities can drag on for months — on both sides of the border. This guide brings together, in one place, the things worth thinking about in advance. It's a practical guide; always confirm the detailed requirements against current official sources.

1. Moving your belongings — transfer of residence relief

When moving personal property from the UK to Poland, you can use the transfer of residence relief procedure (relief from customs duty, subject to conditions). Key points: an inventory of items, proof of having lived in the UK and of moving your centre of life, and the deadlines involved. 2. Your car

3. Authorities and status

• Registration / address in Poland — updating it also matters for official and court correspondence.
• ZUS (social security) / NFZ (health fund) / taxes — establishing your status after returning (tax residency, health insurance).
• UK: closing matters on the British side (HMRC, council tax, benefits).

4. Documents

Certificates (USC), powers of attorney, apostilles — some of this can be sorted out remotely, while you're still in the UK. We have a separate article on that too.

5. Matters "left behind" in Poland — close them off early

This is the point most often overlooked. An old loan, an unpaid invoice, a letter from a court sent to your previous address, a probate matter — these can resurface long after you return (or even while you're still living in the UK). Updating your address and getting your documents in order BEFORE something escalates saves both stress and money.
