Relocation Goods from the UK to Poland — A Complete Guide

Relocation Goods from the UK to Poland — A Complete Guide

When moving permanently from the United Kingdom to Poland, you can bring in your personal belongings without customs duty — under the so-called relocation-goods relief. This is a real saving, but it comes with conditions. Below is a practical guide. Confirm the detailed requirements against current customs sources — this is an area where we help directly.

Who can use it

In principle, a person who moves their place of residence from outside the EU (from the UK) to Poland, after a genuine period of residing abroad.

Key conditions (indicative)

  • Residence abroad: documented residence outside the EU is usually required (e.g. min. 12 months).
  • Ownership of items: the goods should have been in your possession and used for a certain period before the move (e.g. min. 6 months).
  • Deadline for declaration: bringing the goods in / declaring them is usually required within a set window from the change of residence (e.g. up to 12 months).
  • Ban on disposal: items covered by the relief usually cannot be sold for a set period (e.g. 12 months) without consequences.

The above is a general framework — confirm the exact thresholds and exclusions (e.g. for cars, alcohol, tobacco products) on an individual basis.

What documents to prepare

  • A list of belongings (an inventory of items, ideally with values),
  • proof of residence in the UK and of moving your centre of life (contracts, bills, de-registration/registration of address),
  • identity documents,
  • specific documents for a car (a separate procedure).

Most common mistakes

  • No reliable list of belongings.
  • Missing the declaration deadline.
  • Overlooking exclusions (a car or alcohol/tobacco are treated separately).
  • Selling items during the "holding period".
