Registering a Car from the UK in Poland — Step by Step

After Brexit, bringing in a car from the United Kingdom counts as an import from outside the EU — more formalities than before, but it can all be worked through step by step. Step 1. Import customs clearance

A car from the UK is subject to customs clearance on entering the EU/Poland. This is where import charges arise — a customs agency can help at this stage. Keep the invoice/purchase contract and the vehicle documents.

Step 2. Excise duty

Excise duty is payable on a passenger car (depending, among other things, on engine capacity) — declared and paid before first registration. Once paid, you'll receive confirmation needed at the vehicle registration office.

Step 3. Translations and documents

The British registration document (V5C) and other documents usually require a certified (sworn) translation. Gather together: proof of ownership, the V5C, proof of customs clearance, and confirmation of excise duty payment.

Step 4. Technical inspection and the steering wheel

The car goes through a technical inspection in Poland. Vehicles from the UK have the steering wheel on the right — for permanent registration, modifications (including to the lights) are usually required; it's worth planning and pricing this in advance.
