Caravan Insurance for a Trip from the UK to Poland — What You Need to Know

Planning a trip from the United Kingdom to Poland with a caravan? On top of route planning, customs documents and border clearance, one key part of your preparation should be making sure your vehicle and caravan are properly insured. Since Brexit, the rules for travelling from the UK to EU countries have changed — including on insurance.

🔹 Does a caravan need its own separate insurance?

In the United Kingdom, caravans are usually covered by the towing vehicle's third-party liability policy — they don't need separate insurance. The problem appears once you head abroad.

In many European Union countries (including Poland), a caravan is treated as a separate vehicle that should be covered by its own third-party liability (OC) insurance. This means that if an accident is caused by the caravan — and it isn't separately insured — you could end up paying the costs out of your own pocket.

📌 Since 2 August 2021, UK vehicles (and trailers/caravans) no longer need a Green Card to travel legally in the EU, including Poland — the UK is recognised as meeting the requirements of the EU insurance directive. You still need valid third-party insurance that covers travel abroad (gov.uk).

🔹 Is it worth having comprehensive (AC) or short-term cover?

Although it isn't a legal requirement, it's definitely worth considering — especially for longer trips and higher-value caravans.

🔹 How much does a Green Card for a caravan cost?

With most UK insurers, the Green Card is free, but you have to apply for it — it isn't issued automatically. Some insurers charge an administration fee of between £10 and £25, particularly if the caravan needs to be listed separately on the policy.

For example:

• Adrian Flux and Aviva provide a Green Card free of charge, but you need to request it at least 7 days before travelling.

• Direct Line and LV= Insurance may charge a small fee for issuing the document.

📌 Always make sure both the vehicle and the caravan are listed on the Green Card.

🔹 What documents should you carry?

When planning a trip from the UK to Poland with a caravan, prepare the following documents:
