2022 brought a significant success for fresh onion exports from Poland. GUS (Statistics Poland) data points to a growing trend in both volume and value. A 60% increase compared with 2021 reflects strong demand, particularly from Ukraine, where onion production fell by 23,000 tonnes because of the war.
Poland, with a 9% share of EU production, ranks fifth in the EU, just behind the Netherlands, Spain, Germany and France. The area under onion cultivation in Poland has stayed between 23,000 and 27,000 hectares, with harvests ranging from 0.5 to 0.7 million tonnes. In 2022, the harvest was estimated at 643,000 tonnes, a 4% increase on the previous year.
The largest buyers of Polish onions in 2021 were the Netherlands (31% of export volume, 45,000 tonnes) and the United Kingdom (25%, 36,500 tonnes). Over the first eleven months of 2022, onion exports from Poland increased, driven mainly by higher demand from Ukraine (54,000 tonnes, 28% of export volume).
